FAQs for Prospective Students

Pre-screening materials are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. We ask for materials to be submitted within 3 weeks to ensure we can handle the large volume of submissions and give all applicants the best opportunity for a live audition. If you pass the pre-screening, you will be invited to an in-person audition, which must take place before December 7. Most students who pass the pre-screening schedule their audition on a fixed date or on a rolling basis throughout the semester.

No, you can apply in any application pool and be considered for music merit awards including Regular Decision, ED 1, or ED 2. However, you must complete the Common App by November 15 and check the “Scholars” box to be eligible for consideration.

If you pass the pre-screening, you will be invited to audition in-person on campus, and that audition will supersede any supplemental materials that may have been requested by the Office of Admissions. Only merit applicants who pass the pre-screening will be considered for an in-person audition.

You do not need to submit multiple pieces in one video. A single work with contrasting sections is also perfectly acceptable.  You may submit any solo work, either with or without accompaniment.

If you pass pre-screening, you will be invited to an in-person audition. While there are rare circumstances where a Zoom audition may be allowed (i.e. inability to travel with an instrument), a live audition is strongly preferred to ensure full consideration, given the competitive nature and monetary value of Emory’s merit awards in music.

Invitations to submit supplemental materials are issued by the OUA, not the Department of Music. These invitations are typically sent a few weeks after the application deadline. If you are invited to submit materials, you will receive instructions and deadlines at that time.
