Yunling ZhangArtist Affiliate: Piano

Pianist and chamber musician Yunling Zhang enjoys a versatile career as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and educator. Born in Shanghai, she received her early musical training at the Primary and Middle Schools affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Professors Yunlin Yang and Zijie Wu. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree on full scholarship from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University under the tutelage of Boris Slutsky, followed by a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music under the mentorship of Marina Lomazov.

Ms. Zhang made her orchestral concerto debut performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and has since appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. As an active soloist, she has performed in concert halls across China, Europe, Canada, and the United States, playing in Beijing, Hong Kong, Xiamen, Wuhan, Baltimore, Bydgoszcz, New Haven, and Calgary. Ms. Zhang has earned top honors in numerous national and international competitions, including prizes at the Harrison L. Winter Competition, the Hong Kong Asia Piano Competition, the Zhou Guangren Pianist Award, and the Mastroianni Award at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival.

An avid chamber musician, she has performed extensively with Trio Alchemie and secured prizes at Morningside Music Bridge and the Alice & Eleonor Schoenfeld International Competition. She graduated from the Peabody Conservatory as a recipient of the Sarah Stulman Zierler Award for her achievements in Piano Accompanying. She premiered composer Aaron Israel Levin’s Snow Fragments through the Yale New Music New Haven series.

Deeply committed to music education and collaboration, Ms. Zhang served as a Teaching Assistant in Class Piano and Secondary Piano, and as Graduate Assistant in Accompanying at the Eastman School of Music. Her previous appointments include serving as Collaborative Pianist at the East Carolina University School of Music and as Piano Instructor at the ECU Piano Academy. Ms. Zhang currently serves as an Artist Affiliate at Emory University.
