Scholarships and Awards for Current Students
Music Department Scholarships for Private Lessons
Several partial scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in private lessons (MUS 310 or MUS 320) and participate in the Department's ensembles fulfilling all requirements of the courses.
Boykin Scholarships
Open to all students with financial need who are enrolled in the Department's ensembles. Students may be nominated or they may indicate their interest to their performance area coordinator.
Edward Goodwin Scruggs Lesson Scholarships
Open to majors and non-majors (winds, percussion, and strings) who audition successfully into the University Symphony Orchestra. Awards can be partial or full toward the cost of lessons. Merit-based awards determined by faculty decision.
Friends of Music Choral Scholarship
Open to all students enrolled in a choral ensemble for private voice lessons. Awards determined by application and faculty decision.
Friends of Music Private Lessons Scholarship
Merit-based; awards determined by faculty nomination and decision.

Music Department Grants and Awards
Atlanta Symphony Chorus Robert Shaw Memorial: Outstanding Singer Award
This $1,500 scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding music major who is studying voice and is a rising junior. Students seeking this award contact a member of the voice faculty no later than April 1 of the sophomore year. The scholarship will be granted for both the student's junior and senior years. Award determined by faculty decision.
Blumenthal Award
The Katherine Blumenthal Award is funded by a generous endowment to the Department of Music. Ms. Blumenthal was a music major at Emory from 1996 to 2000, with interests in performance and composition. Performance and Composition music majors presenting a department-approved junior, senior, or honors recital are eligible to apply. Selection criteria include the merit of the proposed project and the faculty's assessment of the student's work to that point.
Awards may be used to commission a new work to be performed by the student and/or to hire musicians in the performance of a recently composed work. Students may also use the award to hire musicians in the performance of original compositions. One award up to $1,500 is available each year. Students will be invited to submit proposals in the fall of each academic year.
Friends of Music Awards
Each year two undergraduate students, a rising junior and a rising senior, will be recognized for excellence in music based on performance, academic excellence, leadership, and service. An honorarium is presented at the Friends of Music Annual Dinner. Awards determined by faculty nomination and decision.
Friends of Music Research Grant
Open to music majors working on research projects approved by the History, Culture, and Theory Committee; by application and faculty decision. Please submit a proposal of no more than 500 words to Dr. Senungetuk. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Your proposal should include a brief project description, a detailed budget, a timeline, and a list of other funds applied for (both pending and received). In addition, please provide answers to the following two questions:
- Our department defines research here as "the creation of new knowledge." How will your proposed project create new knowledge for you and/or for others within the Emory community (or beyond)?
- How will the proposed project contribute to your intellectual and/or artistic development?
William Lemonds Award for Summer Study Abroad
The William Lemonds Award for Summer Study Abroad is made each spring to a voice or choral student entering a program of music study outside of the United States during the summer. Open to all students enrolled in a choral ensemble for at least three semesters by the end of May of the current academic year.

Emory Women's Club Arts Scholarship
The Women's Club Arts Scholarship was established by the Emory University Women's Club to recognize achievement by women in the arts at Emory. This scholarship rotates among Dance, Film and Media Studies, Music, and Theater Studies. Award determined by faculty nomination and decision.
Louis B. Sudler Prize in the Arts
The Sudler Prize in the Arts is awarded each year to the graduating senior or seniors who have demonstrated the highest standard of proficiency in one or more of the performing or creative arts. It may be given for performance, execution, or composition in the field of music, theater, dance, creative writing, film, visual arts, or allied areas of artistic endeavor.
This prize, accompanied by a cash award of $6,000, is awarded at the College Honors Program each commencement. Nominations are made by arts departments and programs.
STIPE Society for Creative Scholars
The John H. Gordon Stipe Society was founded to foster creativity and original scholarship among Emory College students. The Stipe Society is comprised of six appointed scholars each year, one from each area of the creative and performing arts.
At the end of each academic year, the Music Department will nominate a rising junior or senior as a Stipe Society Scholar. The student will receive a cash prize and become eligible for additional project funding.
Stipe Scholars are expected to have projects they wish to investigate or accomplish during their term, a demonstrated willingness to participate in community outreach, and a collaborative and appreciative approach to all of the arts. A 3.0 GPA is required.
William B. Dickinson Scholarship
The William B. Dickinson scholarship is a $10,000 award that provides merit based scholarship support to Emory College students with a first preference for fourth year double majors in music (focus in piano) and chemistry; and a second preference for music majors with a focus in piano studies.
