Music At Emory
Undergraduate Program

Prospective Students

Message to Prospective Students from the
Director of Undergraduate Studies

Welcome to Music at Emory!  Students study music for many reasons. Some students commit a considerable amount of time to the performance and scholarship of music and choose to major in music. Other students wish to continue a lifelong participation while pursuing another field of study. In either case, Emory has a place for you.

* Courses: Students may enroll in a variety of introductory and upper-level courses
covering the history and literature of music, Western and non-Western.

* Freshman and Upper-Level Seminars have included topics such as Opera as
Drama, Music Beyond Orientalism, Music and Anthropology, The Beatles: Form,
Style & Culture, Drums and Gongs, Music & Cultural Revolution Since the 1960s,
            and Film Music.

* Performance Opportunities include participation in one of our active ensembles,
many of which take a domestic or international tour each year, or private lessons
with a master teacher, including members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Composition: Students interested in music composition take courses in music
theory, individualized sessions in composition, and have opportunities in our
            electronic music studio.

* Scholarships: Several half-tuition scholarships are offered to incoming
instrumentalists who will play in one of the large ensembles.

All students must be accepted to Emory College through the Office of Admission. Prospective students may audition for the music major during the senior year of high school, although acceptance to the music program has no bearing on admission to Emory College.  Students may also wait until they arrive on campus to audition for the music major and the performing ensembles.

Emory Students may pursue a double major in music and another discipline. Many of our students choose to study music while pursuing a pre-medical, pre-law, or business degree. Students continue to make the choice to stay involved in music while working toward a professional career in another field.

Students may submit recordings and other supporting materials to Admissions to enhance their application.  Please carefully label the recording and send a second copy directly to the Department of Music faculty member in the performance area.  Audition Information

With the opening of the Heilbrun Music and Media Library in 2001, the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts in Spring 2002, and the expansion of facilities to include optimal rehearsal and practice space, more and more students are choosing to study music at Emory University.

The uniqueness of Music at Emory lies in its ability to integrate a high level of artistic training in an environment of diverse musical experiences and academic opportunities.

Please explore our Website and contact us for further information or to set up an audition.
