Michael CruseArtist Affiliate: Jazz Brass

Jazz Artist and Composer Michael Cruse has musically captivated audiences around the world. He is known for his unique take on the singing and trumpet playing style of the incomparable Louis Armstrong. Michael’s compositions and arrangements have been used in various TV shows, films and commercial music and his jingles have been used across the nation. Michael’s musical influences are, but not limited to, Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton and Roy Hargrove.

In the beginning of his musical development, Michael was born in a family that has performed and recorded gospel music spanning over 100 years, the Brooks Sisters and also the Raglin Brothers of Kentucky. Michael
inherited a tradition and deep love for performing music at a young age and traveled to several competitions and performances all over the nation. His Uncle Charles Quillings, who taught and performed with Les McCann,
took Michael under his wing teaching him the trumpet and how to read and write his own music. Michael then went on to attend The University of Cincinnati – College Conservatory of Music for Jazz Studies Performance
and Composition.

After graduating, Michael released his first CD entitled “Unbridled” featuring his group The Michael Cruse Quintet. Michael’s Latest single “You” (2020) can be found available on any streaming platform where music is held. Michael consistently performs locally in Atlanta, Georgia and tours across the nation in various concert halls, venues, jazz festivals and jazz clubs.

Michael has performed and studied with jazz greats such as: Roy Hargrove, Les McCann, JD Allen, Terence Blanchard, Javon Jackson, Lee Soloff, Wynton Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, John Fedchock, Fareed Haque, Vince DiMartino, Gail Wynters, Byron Stripling, Jeff Hamilton, John Von Ohlen, and Kevin Harris. Michael has also performed in several groups for: Bootsy Collins, KeKe Wyatt, Keisha Cole, Mike Phillips, Chantae Cann, Damian Snead, Marc Broussard, and Clyde Brown(Drifters). Michael was also apart of the filming of “Miles Ahead and portrayed NYC based trumpeter and recording artist-Ernie Royal, starring Don Cheadle as Miles Davis(r. April 2016). As well as filming for HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” (released 2020).

Michael’s next career goal is expanding his Jazz Education Non-Profit to give back his love of Jazz to the community of Atlanta. Michael has worked with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s education department in producing
the Essential Ellington Festival in 2016. He and his non profit have started to begin outreach to Atlanta Public Schools and the Metro Atlanta area to give resources(instruments and instruction) and mentors to school band
programs. But also introduces the love and fellowship of jazz and it’s strong history to students as early as kindergarten, because jazz history is American history!
