Lynn Wood Bertrand joined the Emory College faculty
in 1979, and chaired the department for three three-year terms and is again Interim Chair in 2006-07. She is also currently Director of Graduate Studies in Music. She holds
a Bachelor of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music
at the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Arts degree from Kent
State University, and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University
of Cincinnati. Articles by Professor Bertrand
have appeared in Studi Musicali, Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society, and Xenharmonikon. Her educational writings, including "Synthesis and Integration in Music Curricula," and "The Place of Music in a Liberal Arts Education" have appeared in the Proceedings of the National of Association of Schools of Music.
Dr. Bertrand has done extensive archival research in Naples, Italy,
and in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, and published A Guide to Conversation: Georgian and English. Her recent research interests are centered around contemporary Passion music, particularly the Passions commissioned by the Bachakademie Stuttgart in the year 2000 and the recent addition to those works by Sofia Gubaidulina.
Dr. Bertrand teaches the following courses for the Department of Music: Dialogue Among Cultures--Passion Music for Our Time, Choral Literature I, Seminar in Notation and Performance Practice, Music for Two Elizabeths, Music History Review, and Survey of Western Music.
